We created Meeting Star in early 2018, in response to the increasing prices (and increasingly poor customer experience) at Meetup.com. We wanted a simple, user-focused system that handled the basics of publishing events and managing RSVPs through email.
We had strong interest in the early product, but the market was quickly flooded with Meetup alternatives, and early customer input suggested that most people wanted the social network and event discoverability features of Meetup (i.e., “help us find more attendees”).
Our hesitation to pursue building a social network, combined with an abrupt decline in meetups and social activities due to COVID, led us to the decision to put Meeting Star on hold for a while.
Fast-forward to 2023, and we found ourselves wishing again for that simple event publication and RSVP system for managing local events. We decided to refresh the system with a strong focus on data privacy, and an intentional omission of the third-party tracking and surveillance capitalism that is so rampant in other event RSVP applications.
